n July 2015, I stopped in France on the way to do research for an ethnography course I was to teach at Yale that fall. I stayed with an Airbnb host who had emigrated to France from Morocco nearly thirty years earlier, and we talked for hours. She spoke superb French, lived in a carefully maintained downtown apartment, had multiple degrees from French universities, and worked as a business consultant. Still, she had to deal with people who acted as though she did not belong in France.
