When Barton Warren Stone’s father, John Stone, died in Maryland, the Revolutionary War had already begun. Maryland, with the other Colonies, was in the war, and the market for her great money staple, kite foot tobacco, was closed. In consequence “the Stones,” with many other families in southern Maryland, moved to the southwestern part of Pittsylvania County in Virginia, near the Dan River, in a region William Byrd had called “the Land of Eden.” Byrd, who in 1728 headed the commission that established the boundary of Virginia and North Carolina, owned one hundred and five thousand acres of this soil...
